Best Laptops for GoPro Video Editing and GoPro Studio : 2020 Buyers’ guide!

GoPro makes it easier for people to shoot videos, and share their experiences. And while shooting a video with a GoPro camera is as simple as it gets, that’s only half the battle – editing your footage into a fun to watch movie is the real art!

If you’ve just purchased a GoPro, you’re probably wondering what software to use and which the best laptop for editing GoPro videos you can buy. After all, video editing is one of the most resource demanding tasks you can do on a computer. But don’t worry; we have done the research for you and compared the best laptops on the market right now to help you make the best decision.

Before jumping to our recommended laptops for GoPro editing list, let’s first have a look at the type of laptop you should be looking for, and also answer some of the questions you might have about video editing.

What to look for to find the best laptop for editing GoPro videos?

Video editing is one of the heaviest tasks you can do on a laptop; it requires a fast processor, lots of RAM, and storage. But that’s not all, there are other things to consider when choosing a laptop for GoPro video editing or for video editing in general.

In order to a get a laptop for GoPro video editing, you must first decide on the software you will be using to edit videos. Some of the most used programs for GoPro Video editing are Vegas Pro, Pinnacle Studio HD, Davinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere Elements, Apple’s iMovie and Final Cut X, Windows Movie Maker, and of course GoPro’s Quik and GoPro Studio. Of course, each of these programs has its own system requirements.

Let’s first check out the official system requirements for GoPro Studio:

CPU Intel Core i3
Recommended: Intel Quad Core i7 or better
Intel® Dual Core™
Recommended: Intel Quad Core i7 or better
Graphics Card  Intel HD Graphics 4000 or better
with  512 MB RAM or greater for video playback under 4K, 1GB RAM or greater for 4K playback
Intel HD Graphics 4000 or better
with  512 MB RAM or greater for video playback under 4K, 1GB RAM or greater for 4K playback
Screen Resolution 1280 x 800
Recommended: 1920 x 1080
1280 x 768
RAM 4 GB 4 GB
Hard Drive 7200 RPM internal drive, If external, use USB 3.0 or eSATA Recommended: 7200 RPM drive or SSD, If external, use Thunderbolt, Firewire or USB 3.0

These are the minimum system requirements for working with GoPro Studio and Quik, and if you want to use another program such as Adobe Premiere Pro or Vegas Pro, then these requirements are to be revised upwards. Adobe premiere Pro for example will require at least 8GB of RAM, and a dedicated graphics card; and the same goes for Vegas Pro.

So in order to get a good laptop for GoPro video editing, let’s look into each component separately:

Processor:  Video editing is a very CPU intensive task, and getting a fast processor is the first thing to consider when picking a laptop for GoPro editing. The more powerful your processor is, the faster it can handle your GoPro footage. Consider at least a laptop with a recent  Intel i5 processor, or an i7 if it is within your budget. Most new processors nowadays come with multiple cores, which is important for editing and rendering video files. Whether you’re using GoPro Studio or another more advanced video editing program (such as Sony Vegas, Final Cut Pro, or Adobe Premiere), rendering a video will usually utilize your processor’s multiple cores, especially when exporting videos. Laptop processors are not easily (or not at all) upgradable, and usually, there isn’t much choice on the market. Most recent laptops come with “U” processors, which provide a good compromise between performance and power consumption; but you if need even more performance, it is recommended to get a laptop with an “H” series processor. H stands for High performance graphics. You should also get at least a laptop with an 8th gen processor, 8th Gen Core chips are almost 50 and 92 percent faster than their predecessors.  Intel also released their 10th gen processor, which extended HyperThreading on all the CPUs. HyperThreading is a process where the CPU splits each physical Core into virtual Cores called threads.

RAM:  Because you will be working with lots of GoPro video footage, you want as much RAM as possible. RAM is where all the files are stored when you’re working on them, and having more RAM will help speed up things and improve your overall multitasking experience. For most laptops, RAM can usually be easily extended. If you will be using you laptop for editing GoPro videos, we recommend at least a laptop with a 16GB of RAM, especially if you record at 4K resolution. If you’re on tight budget, or if you mainly record at 1080p, you can go with 8GB of RAM.

Graphics card: This mostly depends on the software you use for video editing, and wether the program can utilize GPU acceleration. For example, if you work with Adobe premiere, Sony Vegas, or Davinci Resolve, getting a laptop with a dedicated graphics card will greatly improve your editing experience. Thanks to GPU acceleration, the program can use the graphics card to edit and render videos, instead of relying solely on the processor. In this case, you will literally be cutting your rendering times in half. A Graphics card is also important if you will be working with presets such as such as Fast Blur in/out, mosaic in/out, blending modes, scaling, applying video effects and transitions. If you have one of the newer GoPro cameras, such as the GoPro Hero 7 or 8 and you have lots of 4K GoPro footage to work with, then, I personally recommend getting a laptop with a dedicated Nvidia graphics card. It will greatly reduce your rendering times and improve your workflow. For Nvidia cards, you should pay attention to number of CUDA cores the card has. CUDA is a term that is only specific to Nvidia cards, and it basically indicates the number of processors the card has. A higher number of CUDA cores means that the video card provides faster performance overall. For example, the GeForce GTX 1050 has 640 Cuda cores, the GTX 1080 has 2560 cores, and the RTX 2080 has 2944 CUDA cores. However, this doesn’t mean that a laptop without a dedicated graphics card can’t be used for GoPro videos, especially if you will be doing it occasionally. Depending on your projects, the performance can be be slow without a dedicated graphics, but it’s not impossible. Unless you’re working on lots of footage and want the fastest rendering time and best performance, you can go with integrated graphics.

Storage:  When working with huge video files, having an SSD will tremendously speed up your editing process, and of course also your whole system. PCIe based solid state drives provide an even faster experience, but they are usually more expensive. In most laptops, the hard drive is usually easily upgradable, and some models also come with two drives. For the latest GoPro 8 Black for example, you can record 4K video up to 60 frames per second; and depending on your settings (video codec, bitrate…etc), a 1 hour footage can easily exceed 30GB in size. Ideally, you’d want a laptop that has both fast and large quantity of storage, but that’s hard to find. If you have lots of high quality footage, you can look for a laptop that has a dual drive : a fast SSD for storing the programs, and your most used files; and a large capacity HDD for your videos. You can also just purchase an external drive to store your files.

Display:  The display is where you will “see” the results of your video editing work, and even though you can easily connect your laptop to an external display, it is recommended to get at least a laptop with 15 inch screen for video editing. For example, Adobe Premiere Pro, like many other video editing programs out there,  will split your display into quadrants – a preview window, timeline, effects tab and a bin for all your footage. so, a small display won’t give you enough space to work comfortably. Screen resolution is also very important here, especially if you plan to work on 4K video. Laptops with 4K displays are quite expensive, but it’s worth spending the extra money if you want to take your creations to the next level. Another thing to consider is the display type; you’d want a laptop with an IPS screen (in plane switching). IPS screens have superior color accuracy and produce sharper images. If you do video editing on a professional level and color accuracy is critical to you, IPS is the way to go.

Connectivity and ports: Ports are often overlooked when you’re buying a new laptop; but paying attention to that can save lots of time in the future. For example, a laptop with a USB-C port, means it can transfer files fast from a compatible device, an SD card reader will save you having to use dongles or adapters when importing footage from your GoPro camera. Also, if you have a laptop with Thunderbolt 3 port , you will be able to connect an external graphics card, giving it lots of rendering power when you have space (and money) for this extra hardware.

GoPro makes it easy to create videos and share experiences. And while recording videos with GoPro is just as easy, it’s only half the job – editing your video to make it fun to watch is a real art!

If you’ve just bought a GoPro, you’re probably wondering which software to use and which laptop is best suited for editing GoPro videos. After all, video editing is one of the most resource-intensive tasks that can be performed on a computer. But don’t worry, we’ve researched and compared the best laptops currently available on the market to help you make the best decision.

Before moving on to our recommended laptop for editing GoPro, we will first look at the type of laptop you need to search for and answer a few questions you may have about editing a video.

What should you look for to find the best laptop for GoPro video editing?

Video editing is one of the most difficult tasks that can be performed on a laptop computer; it requires a fast processor, lots of RAM and storage space. But that’s not all, there are other things to consider when choosing a laptop for GoPro video editing or video editing in general.

To get a GoPro video editing laptop, you first need to decide which software you want to use for video editing. Some of the most widely used editors for GoPro video are Vegas Pro, Pinnacle Studio HD, Davinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere Elements, Apple iMovie and Final Cut X, Windows Movie Maker and, of course, GoPro Quik and GoPro Studio. Of course, each of these programs has its own system requirements.

Let’s first have a look at the official GoPro Studio system requirements:

CPU Recommended Intel Core i3
: Intel Quad Core i7 or better
Intel® Dual Core™
is recommended for Intel Quad Core i7 or better.
Graphic card  Intel HD Graphics 4000 or better
with 512MB RAM or more for 4K video playback, 1GB RAM or more for 4K video playback
Intel HD Graphics 4000 or better
with 512MB RAM or more for 4K video playback, 1GB RAM or more for 4K video playback
Screen resolution 1280 x 800
Recommended: 1920 x 1080
1280 x 768
RAM 4 GB 4 GB
Hard Disk Drive Internal drive with 7200 rpm, if external, use USB 3.0 or eSATA Recommended: Use a 7200 RPM or SSD drive as an external, Thunderbolt, Firewire or USB 3.0.

These are the minimum requirements for working with GoPro Studio and Quik, and if you want to use another program such as Adobe Premiere Pro or Vegas Pro, these requirements need to be increased. For example, Adobe Premiere Pro requires at least 8 GB of RAM and a special graphics card; the same goes for Vegas Pro.

So in order to have a good laptop to edit GoPro videos, we’re going to look at each item separately:

Processor:  Editing video is a very demanding task, and purchasing a fast processor is the first thing to consider when choosing a laptop for GoPro editing. The more powerful your processor is, the faster it can process GoPro hardware. Consider at least one laptop with a newer Intel i5 processor, or i7 if it’s within your budget. Most new processors now have multiple cores, which is important for editing and rendering video files. Whether you’re using GoPro Studio or other more advanced video editing software (such as Sony Vegas, Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere), video playback usually uses multiple cores, especially when exporting video. Laptop processors are not easy to use (or not at all scalable) and there are generally not many choices on the market. Most modern laptops are equipped with U-processors, which offer a good compromise between performance and power consumption, but if you need even more power, we recommend a laptop with an H-series processor. H is the abbreviation for high-performance graphics. You must also have at least one laptop with an 8th generation processor. Generation, with the 8th generation of chips that are almost 50 and 92% faster than their predecessors.  Intel also has a 10th generation processor, which has extended HyperThreading to all processors. HyperThreading is a process where the CPU divides each physical kernel into virtual kernels called threads.

RAM:  Since you work with a lot of GoPro videos, you need as much RAM as possible. RAM is the place where all files are stored when you work on it. More RAM speeds up your work and improves the overall multitasking experience. With most laptops, RAM memory can usually be easily expanded. If you use a laptop to edit GoPro videos, we recommend that you use at least one laptop with 16GB RAM, especially if you record at 4K resolution. If you’re on a tight budget or mainly writing in 1080p, you can make do with 8GB of RAM.

Graphic card : It largely depends on the software you use to edit the video and whether the software can use GPU acceleration. For example, if you work with Adobe Premiere, Sony Vegas or Davinci Resolve, purchasing a laptop with a special graphics card will greatly improve your editing capabilities. Thanks to the GPU acceleration, the program can use the graphics card to edit and render video instead of relying solely on the CPU. In that case, you literally cut the time needed for rendering in half. The graphics card is also important when working with presets such as fast blur, on/off mosaics, blend modes, zoom, video effects and transitions. If you have one of the new GoPro cameras, such as the GoPro Hero 7 or 8, and you have a lot of 4K GoPro video, I personally recommend that you buy a laptop with a special Nvidia graphics card. This significantly shortens rendering time and improves your workflow. With Nvidia cards you have to pay attention to the number of CUDA cores the card has. CUDA is a term that only applies to Nvidia cards and refers mainly to the number of processors that have the card. More CUDA cores means that the graphics card as a whole offers better performance. The GeForce GTX 1050 has 640 Cuda cores, the GTX 1080 2560 and the RTX 2080 has 2944 CUDA cores. However, this does not mean that a laptop without a special graphics card cannot be used for GoPro video, especially if you do so occasionally. Depending on your projects, performance can be slow without special images, but this is not impossible. If you don’t work with a lot of images and don’t want to get the fastest rendering time and the best performance, you can use the built-in images.

Storage :  When working with large video files, the presence of SSDs speeds up the editing process and, of course, the entire system. PCIe based SSDs offer even faster performance, but are generally more expensive. On most laptops, the hard drive is usually easy to update and some models are also equipped with two drives. For example, the latest GoPro 8 Black allows you to record 4K video at up to 60 frames per second; and depending on your settings (video codec, bit rate, etc.) an hour of video can easily exceed 30 GB. Ideally, you’ll need a laptop that’s both fast and has sufficient storage capacity, but it’s hard to find. If you have a lot of high quality video footage, you may find a laptop with a dual drive: a fast SSD to store the most commonly used programs and files, and a large capacity hard drive for video recording. You can also just buy an external drive to store your files.

Display :  You will see the results of your video editing on the screen, and although you can easily connect your notebook to an external monitor, it is recommended that you purchase at least one notebook with a 15-inch screen for video editing. For example, Adobe Premiere Pro, like many video editing applications, divides your viewing experience into quadrants – Preview Window, Timeline, Effects Tab, and Shopping Cart for all your footage. A small exhibition does not offer enough space to work comfortably. Screen resolution is also very important here, especially if you plan to work with 4K videos. Laptops with 4K screens are quite expensive, but it’s worth spending more money if you want to take your creations to the next level. Another thing to consider is the type of display; you need a laptop with an IPS display (on the standard level). IPS displays have excellent color accuracy and offer clearer images. If you are a professional video editor and color accuracy is essential to you, then IPS is the road to success.

Communications and ports : Ports are often overlooked when buying a new laptop, but careful attention can save a lot of time in the future. For example, a laptop with a USB-C port lets you quickly transfer files from a compatible device and the SD card reader eliminates the need for a dongle or adapter when importing footage from your GoPro camera. If you have a laptop with a Thunderbolt 3-connector, you can also connect an external graphics card, which gives it more return on investment if you have space (and money) for this extra equipment.
