Have you ever paid attention to the sound of a Windows 10 computer and noticed that something was wrong? You may have tried using headphones, a Bluetooth speaker, or another audio device. However, the imbalance will be clearly audible. This means that one side of your listener is stronger than the other. Sometimes your audio devices just produce distorted sounds when connected to your computer.

If the audio output of your computer’s audio equipment is unbalanced, you do not need to uninstall it or reinstall Windows. You can repair or correct an unbalanced sound. In this guide you will learn how to do this and how to ultimately optimize your listening experience.

ELEMENTS THAT DISRUPT THE SOUND BALANCE OF YOUR COMPUTER

1. Update of the operating system

When you upgrade your PC’s operating system to a new version of Windows, some of the previously installed defaults may be changed. If you install a new operating system on your computer, the sound settings may be corrupted. Some users have reported sound problems after upgrading their PC to the new operating system.

2. Special audio equipment

Windows computers have special audio enhancements that improve the sound of your audio devices. Although these special audio devices help improve sound quality, they sometimes disturb the balance of the audio devices connected to the computer.

3. Faulty headphone/speaker

Sometimes it’s not your computer. The speakers in your audio equipment are simply defective and need to be replaced. To make sure that it is not your PC that is responsible for the sound balance, here are some ways to check (and adjust) the sound balance of your PC with Windows 10.

SETTING THE SOUND BALANCE ON WINDOWS 10PC

1. Disable special improvements

If you notice that the audio channels of your headphones or speakers are unbalanced, this may be due to an improvement that your Windows computer has enabled by default.

Improvements such as bass amplification, surround sound, room correction, etc. can disturb the balance of the headphone channels. To fix this, disable the special extensions connected to your Bluetooth headset.

Here’s how.

Step one: Right-click on the speaker icon in the lower right corner of the taskbar and select Gaming Devices.

Step two: Select an audio device and click Properties.

Step three: Under Improvements, select the Disable all improvements check box. Click Apply and then click OK to save your changes.

If you do this correctly, the sound quality of your audio device should now be balanced. If not, check method 2 below.

2. Volume control for left and right speakers

If disabling the special improvements does not work, check the volume for each channel (and adjust it). It is also recommended to use this method with a new pair of headphones or a new pair of speakers that you plan to use with your computer. This should give you the peak of performance the audio system is capable of.

Step one: Right-click on the speaker icon in the lower right corner of the screen and select Playback equipment.

Step two: Scroll forward, select the device whose audio balance you want to adjust, and then click Properties.

Step four: Then adjust the volume and balance of the left and right channels/speakers on your device as desired.

NOTE: Number 1 means the left speaker/channel and number 2 means the right speaker/channel.

If the left and right channels of the audio device have a different/unbalanced volume, make sure they are balanced.

Step five: Click OK to save your changes. You can play a video or music to confirm whether any changes have been made.

3. Entry in the register

Some manufacturers permanently block the left-right audio channels of their accessories, so you may not be able to adjust the volume of the unit (as in step 4 above).

Sometimes Windows also blocks the ability to adjust the default volume and balance. Good thing it can be unlocked. Learn how to override headphone channel volume sharing by changing the Windows registry.

Step one: Boot up the Windows PC by pressing the Windows + R keys on your keyboard.

Step two: Type regedit in the dialog box that appears and press the Enter key on your keyboard.
